The bed bug problem
Why bed bugs are the hardest household pest to shift.
Bed bugs aren't rare and they aren't a hygiene issue — they hitchhike home from hotels, trains, taxis and second-hand furniture. Then they behave in a way that makes them almost impossible to kill with an ordinary spray.
They hide in cracks
Adults are the size of an apple pip and squeeze into mattress seams, bed frame joints, screw holes and skirting gaps. You rarely see them in daylight.
Eggs are protected
A female lays up to 5 eggs a day, cemented into hidden crevices. Standard sprays kill the adults but the eggs hatch a week later and start the cycle again.
They come out to feed
Bed bugs feed on human blood at night — leaving itchy welts in clusters or lines. Bites often appear on arms, shoulders, neck and back.

The catch
Most bed bug sprays kill 30% of the problem.
Nearly every bed bug spray on the UK shelf — Amazon and supermarket alike — is single-active: it contains one adulticide, usually cypermethrin or permethrin. That kills the visible adults. It does nothing to the eggs.

How to run a proper bed bug treatment with Vital Guard.
Do this once, do it fully, and you should not need to repeat unless reinfested from outside.

Prepare the room
Strip the bed and wash all bedding at 60°C or higher. Vacuum the mattress, frame, skirting, carpet edges and any upholstery — empty the vacuum straight into an outdoor bin. Do not move mattresses or infested furniture to another room — that spreads it.

Shake and set up
Shake the bottle firmly. One trigger pull is roughly 1ml. Open windows for ventilation. Keep children and pets out of the room until surfaces are fully dry.

Surface spray — 20ml per m²
Slightly wet all surfaces: mattress seams and both sides, bed frame joints and screw holes, headboard front and back, skirting boards, carpet edges, and any upholstery seams. Aim for uniform coverage, not soaking — a fine, even mist is what you want.

Space treatment — 1ml per m³
Apply a fine mist through the air of the room at roughly one trigger pull per cubic metre. This catches flying insects and settles onto surfaces you might have missed.

Let it dry, then live normally
Leave the room ventilated for a couple of hours. Do not touch treated surfaces until fully dry. Once dry, remake the bed with fresh laundered bedding. The residual film keeps working for weeks. If bites return after 3 weeks, repeat the surface treatment.

Vital Guard is HSE-approved for amateur and professional use, but it's still an insecticide. Follow the label. Key points:
- Keep out of reach of children. Read carefully and follow all instructions.
- If skin irritation occurs, get medical advice. Keep the product container or label at hand if you need to seek advice.
- Contains chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium extract — may produce an allergic reaction in sensitive individuals.
- Very toxic to aquatic life with long-lasting effects — cover or remove fish tanks, never apply near ponds or drains reaching open water.
- Do not contaminate foodstuffs, eating utensils or food contact surfaces. Wash hands and exposed skin before meals and after use.
- Do not touch treated surfaces until fully dry. Exclude animals during application. Do not apply directly to animals, clothing or bedding.
- All bats are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 — before treating any structure used by bats, consult Natural England, NatureScot or Natural Resources Wales.
- Hazardous to bees — do not spray flowering plants. If treating a wasp nest, block foraging bees from access first.
- Store locked up. Dispose of contents and container in accordance with national regulations.

Does Vital Guard Bed Bug Killer+ actually kill bed bug eggs?+
Yes. That's the specific job of the pyriproxyfen (0.01% w/w) in the formula. Pyriproxyfen is an insect growth regulator that stops eggs and nymphs from developing into breeding adults. Most single-active bed bug sprays on the UK shelf are cypermethrin-only, which kills adults on contact but leaves eggs untouched — and the eggs hatch a week later. Vital Guard's triple-action design is what closes that gap.
Can I spray Vital Guard directly on my mattress?+
Yes — the product is HSE-approved for use on mattresses, carpets and hard & soft furnishings. Strip the mattress first and spray both sides, focusing on seams, piping, buttons and tags. Is it safe to use around children and pets?+
When used as directed, yes. Keep children and pets out of the treated room during application and until every surface is completely dry. Do not spray pet bedding or in areas where pets frequently lie. Do not apply directly to animals. Vital Guard is very toxic to aquatic life — cover or remove fish tanks before spraying.
Will Vital Guard stain my mattress or carpet?+
It's a water-based, low-odour formula and is normally non-staining. As with any spray applied to fabric, we recommend testing on an inconspicuous area first — especially on delicate or dark upholstery.
